Author's Biography

Simon Thompson writes: The project "Portraits of Sculptors in Britain" was conceived two years ago as a way of focusing my somewhat scatter gun approach to shooting portraits of people within the visual arts. At that time I knew little about the subject of sculpture and even less about the artists creating the work. My initial research was via the web, in particular the website of The Royal British Society of Sculptors (the RBS). From the outset I knew that this would be a visual study of sculptors rather than sculpture, and I have striven to create a visually interesting, challenging and informative body of images. I am keen to show both the diversity of people creating contemporary sculpture in all its forms and, wherever possible, both their studios and the work itself - whether it be traditional editions in bronze, ceramics, site-specific pieces or installations, or performance-related pieces. On a technical level, I shoot (almost) exclusively using Nikon 35mm cameras and lenses, hand-held, using available light. I use traditional film and wet process printing rather than digital means. My preferred film stock is Ilford Delta, and I proof-print onto Ilford Multigrade papers.
