The Magical Nightlife of the Demimonde

Part 3: On Stage

The smile on the performer’s face in the drawing On Stage says it all. The unique contentment and sense of fulfilment you feel from having entertained people is a wonderful thing. For me it’s never been about ego - I’ve never been able to take myself seriously enough for that! It’s really about pleasure from entertaining people in whatever ridiculous way you can - within reason! Coming from a Burlesque perspective, whose meaning, according to the dictionary, is derived from a "ludicrous representation; exaggerated parody; grotesque satire" and a tendency "to excite laughter or contempt by extravagant images", I find a great satisfaction from the imaginative absurdity of ‘speciality’ cabaret acts.
