Although the film is not aiming to be an authentic documentary of that time and inevitably a certain creative license would be taken, it felt important to research the history as much as possible. A few weeks later when filming the dance scenes in Malta, the dancing girls were ready for their first scene..... when I say ready, this was only after imploring with the costume department to shorten their dresses so they could actually move from one foot to the other without falling over.
There was nothing we could do about the extremely uneven floor that had been meticulously designed for Menelaus’ palace and made any spinning movement perilous. After a quick confab with Lesley, we eventually abandoned the idea of wearing the ill-fitting sandals provided as they made tripping up inevitable. Alas there was also nothing we could do about the Mediterranean heat - the film set was a furnace!
