The Rock Circus went bust in 2001 and the statues were removed from their watchful position. Despite the instructive lesson they provide on the perils of memorialising those still living, they helped open up the debate on the public commemoration of entertainment figures. It is unlikely that the recent memorials to John Lennon and Eric Morecambe, to name two notable examples, would have been given such an easy ride without them.
