My wife and I stayed by Lake Orta on our honeymoon. It is reputed that the vertebrae of a dragon hangs in the sacristy of the church on this island, so we rowed across one day and knocked on the door. It was a palaver gaining admittance, but eventually a po-faced priest led us in and there it was, a lump of rock mounted in an iron clasp and suspended from the ceiling by three long chains. It was difficult to know what to say. It didn't look very monstrous but you couldn't exactly say "No, that is definitely not made of dragon."

Anyway, it added a certain frisson to swimming off the boat in the middle of the lake, which is very deep and very black.

this very evening my son cal (7 yrs) approached me and said, quite without provocation or prologue: "Anyway, I DO believe in dragons, because otherwise how can you have St George or Beowulf?" Case closed, I believe.
