Gothic royal tombs of Northern Europe

Divine fabric

The choice of material for a tomb and its effigy carried high symbolic value. Bronze, porphyry, as well as marble were the royal favourites for their purity, strength and ineluctable character reflected the perpetual durability of the royal office invested with imperial associations. In England, alabaster was an attractive and sculptor-friendly alternative, and it was employed for royal tombs from the 1330s.
