In the final image, Kokoschka and Li appear naked in a re-working of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Their angular, lean bodies were inspired by the fleshless forms of the Belgian sculptor Georges Minne (1866-1941), as well as the pubescent nudes of Klimt. Despite their frank nudity and the verdant, exotic landscape, however, they remain alone and awkward, their dreams of love unfulfilled.
