Rebelling against the use of static, posed models, Kokoschka made rapid sketches from figures in motion. His studies of circus children, street urchins and young girls, including Lilith, were used as preparatory sketches for The Dreaming Youths. Here, the youths emerge from sleep under a shimmering night sky in an allegory of sexual awakening.
