The Ship has been seen as Kokoschka’s tribute to Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), to whom The Dreaming Youths was dedicated ‘in admiration’. Klimt, a leading advocate of Jugendstil, is seen from behind, looking towards the decorative flora, while the youthful Kokoschka, asserting his artistic independence, turns towards the lone boatman departing for new shores.
