Step-by-step guide to buying prints

Almost all the images on A&A are now available to anyone to buy as high quality photographic prints in a range of sizes with prices starting at a very affordable £1. This illustrated step-by-step guide takes you through the process from beginning to end.

A&A Editor

From world famous masterpieces to many beautiful and lesser-known paintings, drawings and photographs of world architecture and sculpture, the range offered is probably greater than offered by any single comparable museum or gallery. Why not frame them and hang them in your home, office or school, send them directly to friends as gifts, or paste them into your school or college work?

This service is run and maintained by the Courtauld in association with our partners PhotoBox, the UK’s leading online digital photographic company. We accept payment by credit card and delivery is worldwide (normally next working day to addresses in the UK).

Step 1

The first step in buying a print on A&A is either Logging In to the site or, if you are a new user, Registering by giving your name, email address and choosing a password. The process is very similar to that used on any e-commerce site such as Amazon and has been designed to be as clear, flexible and secure as possible. To start either the Log In or Registration process click on the link to the left of the top menu bar, called Log In.

Step 2

If you're already a registered user of A&A you'll be familiar with this screen. Simply type in your email address and password in the section marked Log In, click the button marked Login and proceed to Step 5 below.

If you're registering for the first time then please click on the button marked Register at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3

To register with A&A you need to fill in your email address, your first and last names, and choose a memorable password. In order to make sure that you haven't mistyped your chosen password, we ask you to give it twice. Once you've given this information please click on the button marked Submit. You may also at this point choose to receive emails from A&A whenever the site is updated, and also emails about the Courtauld Institute of Art and other galleries and events at Somerset House. Both are highly recommended means of keeping in touch, and we won't pass on your email address or send you lots of unwanted messages - our typical mailing is once per month.

Step 4

To make sure that it really was you who entered your email address (and not someone pretending to be you) we ask you to respond to a confirmation email that should have arrived in your InBox by the time you've finished reading this text. Please click on the highlighted text in this email to acknowledge that you wish to register with A&A. If your email application doesn't show this text as an active, clickable link, then please select it, copy it, and paste it into the address box on your web browser and hit return. Either way a confirmation page on the A&A site will notify you that your registration has been successful - welcome aboard!

One word of advice: please reply to the confirmation email before logging into the A&A site for the first time. If you experience any problems associated with registration on A&A then please contact us at info@artandarchitecture.org.uk

Step 5

On each record page you'll find a buy this image link just below the image, and another at the far right of the toolbar at the bottom of the page. Both perform the same functions: if you're already logged-in to A&A clicking either will take you to the dialogue box shown in Step 6 where you will be asked to choose the size of print and confirm that you accept our copyright statement. If you're not logged-in then a dialogue box will take you to the relevant page shown above in Step 2.

If you're reading one of our Stories or Insights and wish to buy all the featured images you'll find a buy prints of story images button at the bottom right of the page in place of the buy a print of this image button.

Step 6

The following steps show the process from the point of view of a customer buying an A4-sized print of Pommes, bouteille, dossier de chaise, a watercolour by Paul Cézanne. After logging in to A&A and locating the painting she then clicks the link beneath it marked buy this image.

This calls up a window in which the next step is to select the size of print and click the button to accept our copyright terms. At the moment we are offering four sizes of prints: 7" x 5" (17.5 cm x 12.7 cm), 10" x 8" (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm), A4 (29.7 cm x 21 cm) and A3 (42 cm x 29.7 cm).

Prices are set currently at £1 for a 7" x 5" (approx. €1.50 or US $1.80), £6 for a 10" x 8" (approx. €9.00 or US $11.00), £12 for an A4 (approx. €18.00 or US $22.00), and £20 for an A3 (approx. €30.00 or US $36.50).

Agreeing with out copyright terms certainly doesn't mean that you can't give these prints away to friends, frame them and hang them in your home, office or school, or paste them into your college work. We'd love to think that our images are being used in this way! The purpose of the copyright statement is to make sure that prints obtained through this service aren't being reproduced in books (including educational publications), used on television or in promotional material, or being re-sold commercially. However if you are interested in opportunities for commercial licensing and reproduction of any of the images on A&A please contact us through the appropriate address given on this page

Occasionally you will find that a particular image on A&A is not for sale. This is usually because, although in our collection, copyright still resides with the artist's family or estate. Only around 800 of the nearly 42,000 images on A&A are excluded, and are predictably images of 20th-century paintings, drawings or sculptures. We'll keep reviewing works as they come out of copyright but in the meantime we hope you'll find something here to catch your eye.

Step 7

After selecting the size of image and accepting the copyright statement click on the link marked add to PhotoBox basket.

Step 8

The next window will confirm that the image has been added to your basket. At this point you may choose to either continue using A&A (with the image still remaining in your shopping basket), or go directly to the checkout and make your purchase by clicking on the link marked go to PhotoBox basket. Should you decide to continue browsing and shopping but wish to review the contents of your basket then please click on the basket icon at the top right-hand side of every A&A page.

Step 9

Clicking on the link go to PhotoBox basket takes you to the basket page. This presents an overview of your order and allows you to make any final changes. You may at this point alter the number of prints ordered, change their size, and also display the currency in GB Pounds, Euros, or US Dollars. It’s also possible to cancel your order completely, and view your history of previous orders.

Step 10

Once you're completely satisfied click on the checkout your order button at the bottom of the page. This will take you to a page on which to enter your address details (which should be the same address at which your credit card is registered) and, if appropriate, add a friends address if you wish the images to be sent elsewhere. You will only need to do this once, as all addresses are stored.

Selecting a delivery address in the UK will give you the option of choosing between first class post at £1.50, next working day delivery by courier at £5.99, or special delivery by noon the next day at £9.40. In our experience orders placed by early afternoon GMT and despatched by first class post usually arrive at UK addresses the next working day. However this excellent level of service is not guaranteed, so please consider using the courier or special delivery options if speed is critical.

Of course we warmly welcome orders from customers anywhere in the world. In these cases your options for postage will be calculated from the country address specified for delivery, and are typically: worldwide airmail at £3.80 (approx. €5.74 or US $6.93), Airsure Worldwide Express at £7.70 (approx. €11.63 or US $14.00), or Fedex World at £34.03 (approx. €51.41 or US $62.00).

Step 11

The last step is to review the total for your order (including postage and shipping) and enter your credit card details. Once you have done this, clicking on the button at the bottom of the screen marked continue with order brings up a final screen summarising the prints ordered, the total cost including postage and shipping, the cardholder's address and the delivery address.

Clicking on the button at the bottom of this final screen marked confirm this order is the final step in ordering your prints.

You will receive notification by email within 12 to 24 hours to confirm that your prints have been despatched.
