These works hang awkwardly beside studies such as Virgin and Child with Saints, whose stylised gravity conveys Philpot’s devout Catholicism. The contrast suggests an artist torn between two worlds. However, it is worth looking as well at his sketch of Angels Jumping for Joy (shown on the next page of this story), where the spontaneous exuberance of the celestial dance seems to bless the joy of physical movement, and contact between men.
