About this work
This is an early portrait by Van Dyck, painted when he was still an assistant in Rubens’s studio.

The unidentified man is shown seated in a wide armchair. He has placed a finger in his small prayer book to mark his place. The simplicity of the architectural background, the sitter’s black clothes and his benevolent gaze give him a sober dignity (Permanent collection label)
