About this work
Here the Impressionist painter Pissarro depicts the gentle hilly surroundings of his home village, Eragny in northern France. Clear pencil strokes structure the composition and indicate the main motifs, such as bushes, a group of houses on the right and a long fence in the centre which creates compositional depth. A few daring patches of strong colour help to convey the peaceful atmosphere of a winter landscape, with the white of the paper representing snow in contrast to the yellow wash of the sky.
