About this work
In the foreground, Eve is spinning thread, her action clearly evoking the themes of clothing and of the loss of innocence. Adam in the background is ploughing the land. Cain and Abel, Adam and Eve's children, are also represented.

Fetti’s use of colouristic effects reveals the influence of Venetian painting, and of the art of Peter Paul Rubens. Rubens was active as court painter to the Gonzaga in Mantua not long before Fetti. (Permanent collection label)
