About this work
This painting shows a view towards the square bell-tower of a village church, with figures visible to the right. It may have been painted in Le Cannet in the south of France where Bonnard was to buy a house in 1925. The rich colours herald the expressive freedom of the artist’s late work. Bonnard’s notebooks record his intense observation of nature and describe the sensitivity to the changing colour effects of shadow and sunlight that are so evident in this work. (Permanent collection label)
