About this work
Ribera’s pen drawings are admired for their fluency and spirited touch. Here, with only a few lines, the artist captures the posture, physicality, and expression of the old man, fully absorbed in his reading. The two winged cherubim appear to be separate studies on this sheet, probably executed about 1635, when Ribera was concerned with the portrayal of philosophers as isolated figures deep in thought.
