About this work
This is a large preparatory sketch for a painting by Rubens also kept in The Courtauld Gallery's collection. An earlier drawing in the collection also relates to this work. The basic composition of the final work is already evident here, as are specific details: the dog in the lower left, the men attending the striken Paul and the figure restraining his horse on the right. In addition to these features, Rubens used this large oil sketch to explore the violent excitement surrounding Paul's conversion. (Permanent collection label)
