About this work
The Jas de Bouffan was an estate just outside Aix-en-Provence owned by Cézanne's father. The artist painted many views of the house and the grounds from 1866 until 1899, when the estate was sold. Cézanne was especially fond of the estate because it provided him with the solitude he needed to work.

This painting has been executed with small parallel brushstrokes, a technique Cézanne favoured in the 1880s. It creates a shimmering effect that is particularly well suited to this picture. The leaves of the trees seem to rustle in the breeze. (Permanent collection label)
