About this work
This work relates to a large number of drawings and paintings of domestic interiors in which Sickert plays out different psychological tensions between the recurring figures of a man and a woman. For many of these works he employed two middle-aged models called ‘Hubby’ and ‘Marie’, but here the female figure is a young girl. She dominates the foreground while the somewhat threatening figure of Hubby reclines on a chair behind her. (Permanent collection label)
