About this work
Rosa included such fantastic and monstrous creatures in his painted scenes of witchcraft, which he produced for a close circle of friends and patrons in Florence and Pisa. The artist's upbringing in Naples stimulated his interest in folklore and magic. Here, the monsters' menacing features and expression seem almost tamed by Rosa’s delicate handling of the drawing medium. (Permanent collection label)
