About this work
Thomas Webster’s scenes of rural childhood were admired for their simple and unaffected character. With its strong outlines and schematized treatment of the garments, the artist places emphasis on the drawing’s design, enlivening the skin with touches of dampened red chalk. The finished appearance of the drawing, and the fact that Webster gave it to a friend, would suggest that, even if it was a study for an unknown painting, the artist valued the drawing as independent work.
