About this work
These two identical figures engaged in an extremely close pas de deux reflect an aspect of Rodin’s sculptural process which he developed whilst working on his masterpiece, the Gates of Hell (1883-90). This is the montage or combination of pre-existing works to form an entirely new composition. The dance movement may derive from the high kick of the French cancan. (Permanent collection label)
