About this work
This humorously titled drawing of a cook in chef’s whites relates to Sickert’s painting, The Tottenham Distillery (around 1924, Tate, London), which probably represents an old fashioned tavern at 6 Oxford Street, where Sickert used to lunch. Considering the artist’s habit of carrying scraps of paper about with him to make on the spot drawings, it is possible that he drew this man on a visit to The Tottenham. (Permanent collection label)
