About this work
Charles Heath’s twenty-four part Picturesque Views in England and Wales was the most ambitious engraving project with which Turner became involved in the 1820s and 1830s. Ninety-six of his watercolours were translated into prints by a team of engravers under his close supervision, their proofs often corrected and annotated by him.

(On one proof of Colchester he requests the printmaker to ‘burnish the sky round the sun etc’.) Turner’s frequent interventions ensured that only the highest quality engravings were made after his work. (Permanent collection label)
