About this work
This drawing is an example of the studies Lely made in preparation for his painted portraits. The delicate rendering and intricate pose of the hand and arm, accompanied by billowing drapery finished in white chalk, all convey a sense of movement and lightness. The study has been connected to a portrait of Henrietta Boyle, Countess of Rochester, which belongs to Lely’s famous ‘Windsor Beauties’ series representing the most beautiful women at the court of Charles II.
