About this work
The Venetian artist Piazzetta made a large number of head studies and portrait drawings in charcoal and black chalk for collectors to purchase as independent works. The artist balances firm lines with soft tones and hatching in the shadows to create this subtle drawing of a peasant woman holding a basket. The immediacy of the crop, combined with the direct gaze, lends the image a feeling of captivating intimacy. (Permanent collection label)
