About this work
Romney probably painted this portrait around the time Georgiana Peachey married George, Lord Greville. It was the painter’s first aristocratic commission. The portrait may have been completed after Lady Greville’s death: she died on her first wedding anniversary, aged nineteen, a few days after the birth of their son George.

Lady Greville modestly looks away to the right, as befitting a young woman of her social status. (Permanent collection label)
