About this work
Lysons (1727-1800) wears the academic robes of a Doctor of Civil Law, a degree he received from Oxford University in 1759. He was also a licensed physician and, after leaving Oxford, practiced in Gloucester and Bath. It is not clear however why he is shown holding an iris, although preparations from this plant were used during the eighteenth century to treat gout and joint pain.

This is one of Kettle’s earliest portraits, executed shortly before he left for India. (Permanent collection label)
