About this work
A monochrome watercolour, signed by Turner, and known only from a photograph, is remarkably similar to this drawing, which suggests that it is a study for the watercolour. Yet, although the drawing style is Turneresque, the cow on the right is much like those by Girtin. Distinctions between the artists' styles are notoriously difficult to make at this time. A collaborative pencil study for a signed watercolour would be unusual. More probably the drawing was made by Girtin after Turner's watercolour. (Permanent collection label)
