About this work
Bonington produced a number of rapid watercolour sketches of the sky which do not seem to be related to any particular composition, and, unlike Constable's sketches, are undated and do not contain meteorological notes. In this group Bonington manages to suggest the vastness and depth of the skies on a very small scale, focussing in particular on the spectacular effects of the rising and setting sun. The choice of medium is crucial to the effect of these images; the whiteness of the paper shines through the watercolour, reinforcing the luminous effects of the clouds and sky.
