About this work
Verso

On this sheet the artist documents various pieces of religious furniture decorated with classical motifs. An inscription at the bottom suggests that he had seen them in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. The eagle was possibly part of a lectern; the chair or bishop’s throne below was ornamented with acanthus leaves. At the upper right a quick sketch shows the Resurrection with the blessing Christ hovering in the air, unnoticed by two sleeping soldiers. (Permanent collection label)
