About this work
‘Hubby’ appears in many of Sickert’s compositions at this time, his solid and portly frame dominating the character of these works. Sickert first employed him as an odd-job man in 1911 but he soon became one of the artist’s favoured models and Sickert enjoyed Hubby’s colourful personality. This sketch is related to a painting in which a female figure appears on the iron bed in the background. Here, her cropped outline can be seen on the right-hand side of the sheet.
