About this work
Two angels draw back a curtain to reveal the Holy Family, together with St Elizabeth and her infant son, John the Baptist. Christ, his arms held out in blessing, is at the centre of the composition. A sumptuous bedroom can be glimpsed behind the open doorway that frames the Holy Family.

Garofalo was one of the leading painters in early sixteenth-century Ferrara. This picture exemplifies the small and delicately painted devotional images in which he specialised. (Permanent collection label)
