About this work
Morisot concentrated much of her attention on domestic or family scenes, frequently depicting the childhood of her daughter, Julie. In this tender portrayal of mother and daughter, Morisot focuses on the proximity of their heads, using drypoint (scratching directly into the plate) to highlight their hair and eyes and to draw attention to their gazes, hers towards the viewer, Julie’s on her mother’s drawing. Morisot’s airy treatment marks her as a major exponent of Impressionist printmaking. (Permanent collection label)
