About this work
From 1916 onwards Matisse spent his summers working in Nice, where he employed local models. Henriette Darricarrère, the woman seen here, was his favourite model of the 1920s. Working directly on the easily marked printing stone, Matisse exploited the freedom that the lithographic medium allows. He created subtle tonal variations to contrast robust forms and dense patterns, echoing the typically bold colours and arrangements in his paintings. (Permanent collection label)
