About this work
Pissarro produced thirteen paintings during his three-month stay in Rouen in 1883. He described the northern French city as having terrific character and being as beautiful as Venice.
This view looks down from his hotel room onto Place Lafayette. The quays on either side of the river Seine are lined with ships and factory buildings. The basilica Notre-Dame de Bonsecours appears on top of the distant hills.
