About this work
Renoir visited the artists’ colony at this small town in Brittany on several occasions during the late 1880s and early 1890s. In this work, Renoir plays on the contrast between the loosely brushed foreground and the more crisply defined tree trunks. These experiments led him to move away from the sketch-like quality of the Impressionist technique and towards a more forceful use of colour. It is best represented in this work by the play of the sun on the tree trunks and foliage. (Permanent collection label)
