Allegorical group on a pedestal

Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo (1619-1671)

Pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk on paper

Width: 10.2 cm; Height: 15.5 cm;

Acquisition (source, method, date)
Witt, Robert Clermont (Sir); bequest; 1952

About this work
Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo was the most eminent of Alonso Cano’s followers. In this design of a graceful sculptural group, the influence of the older artist’s technique is evident in the free black-chalk underdrawing gone over with pen and ink and modelled with a rich chiaroscuro wash. (Permanent collection label)
