Camille Pissarro

spacer Art
"Something like God Himself", said Cézanne of Pissarro, father figure of the Impressionists, friend of Manet, mentor of Monet, Cézanne and Gauguin.

Life
Born of a Jewish family on a Danish colony in the West Indies, Pissarro, as a progressive painter and an anarchist, was a kind of refugee for most of his life.

London and Norwood
'London - a nation, not a city" said Benjamin Disraeli, and indeed in 1871, when Pissarro first came to the pleasant suburb of Norwood, London was the greatest city on earth, twice the size of Paris and growing still.

The Railways
The first passenger service in the world opened in 1830, between Liverpool and Manchester. By 1855 the 'iron veins' ran into every limb of England and branch lines began to be introduced, one modest one of which ran through Lordship Lane station.
