A green coloured pigment found in some natural earth deposits. The colour comes from green coloured minerals (glauconite or celadonite) contained within the clay. It was especially used as an underpaint for flesh tones.
Shadows around the contours of faces could be achieved by allowing the green earth underpaint to show through the flesh pink paint, optically creating a grey colour effect through the combination of the green and the pink.
