There is a tradition in the colours worn by certain biblical characters within religious paintings. Thus the Virgin Mary's cloak and veil are usually blue (fig.1), symbolic of the heavenly sky, and of the Virgin's role as Queen of Heaven. Her robe is usually red, a reminder of the blood of Christ.
Mary Magdalen (fig.2) is recognisable in Crucifixion scenes by her red cloak.
St Peter (fig.3) commonly wears a yellow cloak over a blue or green tunic.
