Daddi creates four separate areas on the right wing, bounded by gilt mouldings. In the top arched section the Annunciate Virgin sits in her house against the backdrop of an ornate textile.
Her bewilderment and alarm at the news she has just been told by the angel Gabriel of her imminent conception, contrasts with her grief following the death of her Son in the Crucifixion scene directly below.
Furthermore, her sorrow (which results in her state of collapse at the foot of the cross) is made all the more poignant when seen in relation to her expression of joy at the birth of her son, as seen in the Nativity scene on the left-hand wing of the triptych.
Between the scenes of the Annunciation and the Crucifixion, two Evangelists sit their desks, bearing witness to the events taking place around them.
