In the compact left wing of the tabernacle, Daddi presents seven distinct areas, each with interesting details to attract the viewer's attention. Some areas have mouldings surrounding them, others are defined by the composition of the painting itself, and the artist's skillful use of spatial depth.
The Annunciating Angel Gabriel kneels within the gabled section at the top of the panel, separated from the two Evangelists in the triangular spandrels below. Both Evangelists are sitting at their desks, writing their gospels; whilst one of them looks over with interest towards the Virgin and Child in the central panel, the other is shown peering over the moulded arch at the Annunciation to the Shepherds on the hillside below.
This event is separated from the Nativity scene below by the stable roof, under which the Virgin and Child are seen sheltering. Rocky landscape is then used to create an area for Joseph, and also for the second shepherd with his sheep.
