Unfortunately, as is the case with many 14th century works of art, there is no available documentary evidence or contract concerning the original owner of the triptych. It was donated to the Courtauld Gallery in 1978 as part of the Princes Gate Collection - the bequest of Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978). Count Seilern had acquired this triptych in 1956 from its owner Prince Oktavian Collalto, it having been on loan since 1914 to the Brno Museum in Czechoslovakia. The triptych is recorded as having been in the possession of the Collalto family since the time of General Ramboldo Collato (1575-1630), who was of Italian origin and born in Mantua. The back of the triptych contains the seal of the Collalto family.
The lack of evidence concerning the triptych prior to the early 17th century leads to questions concerning its whereabouts and ownership between the date of its production in 1338 and the time it entered the possession of the Collalto family.
